The most important factor in supervision, in my mind, is TIME.
People need sometimes time to understand the information (3-5 meetings), as their thinking processes have different speeds.
Time is our very good friend in these cases.

Sometimes the problem or tension inside the organisation or team is so big and overwhelming, that people cannot see their way out. So they unconsciously create a similar atmosphere during the meeting. Silence. Nobody answers the questions. Not possible to formulate the goal. Somebody says maybe that “supervision is pointless”. etc
Their way of dealing with their tension is to OBSERVE, how the supervisor is dealing with it. (Yes, very similar to the parenting process. )
This phenomenon is also known as the “parallel process”.

Mystery of such supervision processes, if handled properly – the tension suddenly disappears in the last half of the last meeting, and people start to talk and work.
And the miracle is born.
And they are ready!
And Your contract is over… Enjoy Your Success!

************

Miks mitte and all keeruliste või “kinni jäänud” protsesside puhul?

AJAFAKTOR!

Seega nad loovad alateadlikult supervisiooniprotsessi sama pingeolukorra. Vaikus. Keegi ei vasta Su küsimustele. Iga infokild tulev kätte vaevaga. Võib-olla mõni julgem annab tagasisidet, et supervisioon on mõttetu. Jne.

Ja Sinu leping lõpeb just selles kohas … Naudi oma töö viljasid!

The supervisor’s job is to CONTAIN a lot of different emotions. It is very draining and needs extra time for preparing and recovering.

Supervisors have to take RISKS, which might lead to benefits or sometimes also to failure.

Professionalism in supervision comes through LEARNING and constant self-REFLECTION. This takes a lot of resources.

************

Miks on supervisiooniteenuse hinnad kõrged?

Superviisori töö on tulla toime osalejate seinast-seina varieeruvate tunnetega.

See on äärmiselt ressursimahukas tegevus.

“How are You today?” And I told, I feel really bad, but I try to focus, and I can work […]

“How are You today?” And I told, I feel really bad, but I try to focus, and I can work with the group.

And then I read from the report later – everybody was feeling good and enthusiastic.

How did this make me feel? Honestly? Offended! Sad. Surprised. Not heard … Questioning the overall professionalism of this internationally recognised supervisor.

Please, do not ask the people in the session, how they feel if You have no time or intention to listen.

In supervision – asking, how are You, is not small talk, but a format of tuning in, diagnosing the needs, and measuring the temperature of the group.

********************

Igapäevaelus me küsime “Kuidas sul läheb?” nii suusoojaks, kui mõnikord me tõesti tahame teada.

People kind of often end up in supervision or psychological counselling session with no clear goal.

“I heard, You are fantastic!”
“I have no theme – I am happy to listen to what You say.”
“I believe You can make me a better professional/person.”
“I have this big problem – what would you do?”
“I just came to see, what is happening.”

Supervision (or counselling) should be taken when there is a wish for change or development.
If the person or group has no theme, no wishes, no visions, it is OK to end the meeting.
In case You fall into the flattering or helper’s trap, You might end up being an entertainer or a figurine in the victim triangle.

************

“Sinu suust tuleb ainult kuldmune.”
“Mul on üks probleem – mis sina selles olukoras teeksid?”
“Ma than olla parem versioon endast.

One of the easiest traps, even for the supervisor, is to hear the problem and start offering solutions.
Solutions can be either specific suggestions or some fantastic exercises, which fit the theme.

Supervision client should always be a professional, who should be able to self-actualise and reflect.
Before You jump to work, please remember to ask, what the supervisee needs or wants in connection to the theme that is brought out.
“What is Your question to me? How can I be helpful?”
It is very often a long and painful process, but as a reward, the supervisee takes responsibility and lead for her/his own themes.

********************

Superviisori lõksudest – me kipume kiiresti hüppama töösse, ilma süüvimata, mida klient toodud probleemiga ette võtta tahaks.
Kliendile see enamasti sobib imehästi, sest mõnikord on mõnus “puhata” vastutusest, and juhtimine üle teisele ägedale professionaalile.

Probleem saab lahendatud. Enamasti on kõik õnnelikud.
Heal juhul saab superviisorist taaskord “meelelahutaja” ja abistaja.
Halval juhul vastutab supervisor naha ja kõrvadega teise inimese valikute eest.

Tuletame meelde. Kuulates ära inimese probleemi ….
“Mis on sinu küsimus? Soov? Vajadus?”
“Kuidas saan mina Sind praegu aidata?”

What is the ultimate goal of the supervisor?

To possess and introduce to Your client a wide range of methods and exercises?

To work towards and get to the “ahhaa!” moments?

To set and reach the goal?

To be the best partner and enlightener on discovering the satisfaction in work?

For me, the most important goal is to create a safe space and help people to reflect.

There are 2 general types of client relationships.

1) People, who are motivated and clever, interesting people, with whom it is really easy to fall in love, get positive feedback, to learn from. People who lift also us up, because they are inspiring.

2) The type, where you always fall into the same traps as if nothing has happened in previous sessions. It might seem nothing is changing, people are “whining” or “protesting”, looking for victim traps, and you are constantly back to the same situation. And at the same time, this type of client really needs supervision and is moving on with very small steps, because it is very hard to be perfect all the time, they come from a different cultural space, educational background, or work experience.

How is Your relationship with boredom, sliding back, not getting any reward at all, and sometimes getting attacked about your work or even yourself? What does it take to be in this place where supervision is actually really needed, but not giving the praise, that we are trained to look for?

Holding space and relationships can be different things, but at a minimum, it means taking the initiative and being empathic. Projection of feelings is not a comfortable but inevitable part of the counselling process.
